Weather warning: Dinas Powys FC U13 postpone Pen y Fan climb

A CHILDREN’S football team will ditch the pitch soon to conquer a mountain – but the event has been put on hold.

Dinas Powys FC U13 will be climbing Pen y Fan to show support for a team member’s mother who is battling cancer and raise money for a good cause.

The mother of one of the young team members was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.

Now, the young players and coaches are set to climb Pen y Fan to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, where she is undergoing treatment.

Laura Atkinson, whose husband helps run the team, said: “We have a fantastic football family and felt we needed to do something positive in support of one of our parents.

“Velindre is such a wonderful hospital and many of us have had experience of family members having been treated there.”

They planned to brave the climb on Saturday, November 27, but this had been postponed due to safety concerns based on the weather.

Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds across Wales on November 27.

Sharing the news on the JustGiving page, Ms Atkinson wrote: “Extremely strong winds are forecast up to 80mph on exposed hills.

“This combined with the northerly direction will result in very cold temperatures on the top of Pen y Fan which could present safety issues should anything happen to any of our group.

“As such, it is with a heavy heart that we will need to postpone our walk until a later date.”

The team has already raised more than £1,200 – double their initial £500 target – with all donations welcome.
