Bogus caller and scam warning for Selby residents

28th April 2021Police in Selby are urging residents to be vigilant after reports of cold callers and scams targeting vulnerable and older people.
There have been several reports of suspicious activity involving people calling at properties and offering to buy the motorhome parked outside – even if they are not for sale. more

Warning after scam letters sent to businesses offering “Covid air purifiers”

29th April 2021A warning has been issued after reports of letters advising businesses that ‘Covid Safe air purifiers’ must be purchased as a legal requirement. The letters claim to come from a ‘Covid Safe Taskforce’ as part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. more

Roofer fined for “unfair trading”

4th May 2021A recent magistrates’ court trial resulted in a local roofer being found guilty of an offence under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations.
All Seasons Roofing Contractors Limited of Sandycroft, and its Director Patrick McDonagh, were ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £4,800. more

Fake Asda and Morrisons delivery texts sent to public

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) received evidence of a text scam involving supermarket delivery messages.

One of the phoney texts states that “your Asda order is out for delivery” and links to a webpage supposedly allowing the recipient “to track your order and view your delivery note.” more

Android users warned over dangerous scam text message

28th April 2021

A new scam text message is doing the rounds in the UK, and it’s so serious that UK mobile networks have issued warnings to their customers.

The scam text in question claims to be from DHL and suggests you have a package arriving. You’re then asked to click a link which will take you to a genuine-appearing website where you’ll ask you to download a ‘tracking app’ to help you track your parcel. more

Scam warning over tickets, travel and insurance fraud

29th April 2021

Criminals are poised to bombard people with ticketing, travel and health insurance scams as lockdown restrictions ease, a trade association has warned.

With many people looking to book holidays and tickets to concerts or festivals, criminals are advertising bogus tickets at low prices as well as for events that have already sold out, UK Finance said. more

British Gas scam sees hundreds receive fake refund emails ‘designed to steal’ bank details

3rd May 2021

Worryingly, Action Fraud has received 537 reports within 48 hours relating to fake emails purporting to be from British Gas. The emails claim the recipient is due a refund, as a result of overpayment. more

Woman loses nearly £113k in dating site romance scam

6th May 2021

A woman says she is facing bankruptcy after losing just under £113,000 to a criminal she met on a dating site.

Rachel Elwell, from the West Midlands, said the man, who claimed he lived nearby, told her he had gone abroad for an engineering contract in Ukraine. more
