Precious jewellery stolen by crafty crooks posing as water board workers

22nd November 2021Burglars posing as water board officials have stolen some precious jewellery from a Northampton home.
On Tuesday, November 9, at around 5pm, a man claiming to be from the water board arrived at a house in Rothersthorpe Road in Northampton.

Believing him, the elderly householder let the man in, and walked him through to his kitchen. But while this man was entering the home, his accomplice entered the property, stealing cash and jewellery. more

Rogue roofers and scam sellers among latest criminals reported in Warwickshire

22nd November 2021The county’s Trading Standards officers are warning residents to beware of rogue roofers and bogus insulation companies.

Criminals are pressurising homeowners into buying a new roof or new insulation after making bogus loft inspections and falsely claiming the roof is on the verge of falling in, or that moisture readings indicate that more insulation is required. more

Man, 75, loses Christmas savings as crafty criminals use ‘friend in need’ tactic

A gutted grandfather says Whatsapp criminals stole all the cash he had saved up to buy Christmas presents after falling victim to a new ‘friend in need’ scam.

The 75-year-old was tricked by the criminals who impersonated his granddaughter on the communication app. more

Warning over criminals using well-known lottery draws to steal money

Criminals are taking advantage of well-known lottery draws to trick people into handing over money and personal information, police have warned.

Victims have handed over almost £1 million to lottery criminals during the past seven months, reporting centre Action Fraud and City of London Police said. more

A criminal posing as a successful businessman conned a millionairess he met on Tinder into handing him almost £150,000, a court heard.

Richard Dexter promised victim Amrita Sebastian that he was on the verge of a ‘big windfall’ and ‘significant sums’ after telling her he had acquired the patents to valuable biopharmaceutical technology. more

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has been working with JobsAware and Cifas to understand the impact of scams, and how to avoid being scammed.
It says that job scams are predicted to increase again this year, so it’s important to remain vigilant and familiarise yourself with the signs of a potential job scam or fraudulent job advert. more

Friends Against Scams
Due to the success of last year’s campaign, Friends Against Scams is once again running a Scamnesty (a scam mailing amnesty) Campaign throughout December.

The team want to encourage everyone in the UK to have a chat with their loved ones about scams and to send in any scam or unwanted mail into the National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team, free of charge!
