Gangs of London – in Wales

Gangs of London is Sky Atlantic’s second biggest original drama launch of all time and has been created by award-winning filmmaker from Wales – Gareth Evans and his creative partner Matt Flannery. The series takes audiences on an immersive journey into the hidden heart of the capital.

Wales Screen officials worked with Gareth and the production company Pulse Films on early studio recces in 2017. Welsh Government also supported Gareth’s feature film Apostle for Netflix which filmed in Margam Country Park, Neath Port Talbot.

Gareth Evans, said:

Naturally, after my experience of working on Apostle I had a strong desire to be able to bring at least one episode of Gangs of London back to Wales. With Ed Talfan stepping in to produce, this stand-alone mid-season episode was filled with Welsh talent both in front of and behind the camera. Across 7 weeks of production, we shot major action sequences from Cardiff to Penwyllt, from a high rise set built inside Dresd Studios in St Athans to Evie’s house and a jetty erected on the backlot at Pencoed. It was an absolute joy to be able to bring work of this ambition and scale home and I’m beyond proud of the end result.

Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas, said:

I’m delighted that we’ve been able to support Gareth and his latest creation which is also a showcase of the talent we have here in Wales. The last few months have been extremely difficult for the sector – and it’s good to have a glimpse of the excellent work which has been made in Wales – and will of course continue when we’re once again able to get the cameras rolling on productions such as these.
