From Purple Poppadom to Tukka Tuk – Barry venue success

AN AWARD-WINNING chef’s Barry food venue is celebrating smashing their first inspection.

Tukka Tuk, which started as a mobile street food business, set-up shop in Barry’s Goodsheds in August 2020 and recently earned a ‘five’ food hygiene rating in the Barry venue’s first inspection.

The venue was opened by award-winning chef Aand George – the man behind the recently refurbished Purple Poppadom in Cardiff – who teamed up with Rupali Wagh to open the Barry premises.

Speaking of their inspection, Rupali Wagh said: “It’s a lovely feeling when your hard work is recognised; this means so much to all the team.

“We are a small bunch, but we couldn’t have done it without everyone pulling together. This was our first inspection here and we wanted to get the same top score as all our businesses.

“The team was very proud to place that sticker on the door and made it into little celebration.

“It has been a year of challenges, learning and adapting all the time.

“We have been so thrilled by the way our customers have kept coming back and been so supportive though it all – both people finding us for the first time, and old friends coming to get their spice fix.”

Tukka Tuk still has a van for events and, since opening their Goodsheds venue, has set-up a Tukka Tuk in Swansea and at Cardiff Market.

“We like to say our food is full of ‘sunshine flavours’,” added Ms Wagh.

“Ingredients like coconut, mustard seed, curry leaves, tamarind and green chillies are common. They are the distinctive tastes of Anand’s Kerala home, where he found inspiration from his family and took that into restaurants.

“He tells his story in his book The 5000 Mile Journey he brought those flavours to Cardiff [for his orignal restauarant – Purple Poppadom] and we have never looked back.”

Barry’s Tukka Tuk offers dining in, take-away, plus ordering for collection through an app, with cash and card accepted.

Local companies are also welcome to get in touch to order food in bulk for staff meals.
